Supersport Team At the end of 2005, an impending completely new R6 model was given an increased level of importance for immediate on track success, so the already successful structure of the 2005 Fraser Motorcycles Yamaha Racing Team was brought in house under the YRT umbrella.
Existing team staff, and rider Mark Aitchison, came over from the Fraser’s Team, and additional staff as well as a second rider; Jason O’Halloran were hired.
Crew chief Marty Dowd had already gained a great deal of racing team experience with the Fraser’s Team, and prior to that the Sydney City Motorcycles Race Team, so once again an already successful combination was given more support by Yamaha as an official factory team.
Also making the transition from privateer team sponsor to factory team sponsor was David from Caprice, who, apart from being a valuable financial and logistical sponsor, also brought a wealth of promotional expertise and enthusiasm to the new team.
While the Superbike team has a combined experience between riders and staff that comes with age and involvement in this sport, the Supersport team makes up for a lack of age and experience with youthful exuberance and enthusiasm.
Yamaha's plan for the Supersport team is to bring on young riders, and give them an opportunity with in a specialised environment to develop their skills under experienced management. Riders are evaluated each year at the Australian Institute of Sport, and fitness programmes mapped out for them.
The Yamaha racing rider programme will then provide a career patch through Supersport to Superbike within Australia, then on to managed opportunities in various overseas and international racing series.
